The Hokutosei is a sleeper express train between Ueno and Sapporo that was introduced in 1988 with the opening of the Seikan Tunnel.It gained popularity from the time it began operation as a luxury sleeper train that had private sleepers, a lobby car, and a dining car. The 200th car, which had a small sweepback angle on the gable side and a small rear observation window, was also modified for cold regions, such as changing the boarding door to a sliding door, for the Hokutosei.
