With the success of the MP15, there was a demand for a model with an advanced AC drive system. The MP15AC replaced the MP15DC’s DC generator with an alternator producing AC power which is converted to DC for the traction motors with a silicon rectifier.
EMD applied the lessons learned from the BL2’s lack of success in developing the GP7. The EMD BL2 is a model of diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division (EMD). A total of 58 units (plus a single BL1) were built between 1947 and 1949.
The SW1200 was the third model of 1,200 hp SW series switchers built by EMD. It was a successor to the SW7 and SW9. Late SW1200s built in 1966 were instead built with the 567E 12-cylinder engine. Most of the locomotive’s external features were unchanged from the SW9, making distinguishing between the two models difficult.

Externally, the RS-2 bodywork was more rounded. Compared to the 539, it had a smaller cylinder and higher cylinder speed. Eight of the ALCO RS-2s were exported to Canada. ALCO built the RS-2 to compete with EMD, Fairbanks-Morse, and Baldwin Locomotive Works.
