The SW1200 was the third model of 1,200 hp SW series switchers built by EMD. It was a successor to the SW7 and SW9. Late SW1200s built in 1966 were instead built with the 567E 12-cylinder engine. Most of the locomotive’s external features were unchanged from the SW9, making distinguishing between the two models difficult.

Executive Line Diesel Baldwin VO-1000 Phase 1 – Tsunami Sound & DCC Equipped — Great Northern #140 (Pullman Green, Omaha Orange). Tsunami Sound & DCC Equipped –. DC / DCC with TSUNAMI SOUND. In 1947-48, Baldwin uses the VO-1000 design to create the A1A-A1A 62000 (Baldwin DRS-6-4-660NA) for the French national railways.
Outwardly, these units (and the SW600 of which only 15 were built) were virtually identical. Production ended in late 1965 with a combined total of 743 engines. FACTORY INSTALLED DCC with QUANTUM SOUND.
Externally, the RS-2 bodywork was more rounded. Compared to the 539, it had a smaller cylinder and higher cylinder speed. Eight of the ALCO RS-2s were exported to Canada. ALCO built the RS-2 to compete with EMD, Fairbanks-Morse, and Baldwin Locomotive Works.
