Iron Planet Hobbies Kato N Scale ~ EMD F40PH Commuter Version ~ Standard DC ~ Metra #104 City of Chicago ~ 176CHICAGO This detailed Kato N Scale EMD F40PH is based on diesels which became synonymous with Amtrak and many commuter railroads. Although in 2024 the F40PH has been retired from Amtrak service, it operated for decades on Amtrak trains and on many commuter railroads such as VRE, MBTA, Caltrain, GO Transit, Metrolink and Metra.Over 500 F40PH locomotives were manufactured by EMD in various configurations. To support passenger service, the F40PH is equipped with a secondary electrical generator referred to as the head end generator (or HEP, for Head End Power). The need for constant frequency power means that these HEP units are constantly running at 900rpm, resulting in the nickname “Screamers” for the units due to the sound. The models have directional headlights and roadname-appropriate ditch lights and rear markers on commuter versions. The models feature Kato magnetic knuckle couplers, a five-pole motor with dual brass flywheels for smooth operation, blackened metal wheels, all-wheel electrical pickup and a DCC-friendly mechanism for easy drop-in of a DCC decoder. This EMD F40PH is one of many Kato N Scale locomotives. We are an authorized KATO dealer. Thanks For Looking!
