The EF59 is a class of Japanese electric locomotives originally converted between 1963 and 1972 from EF53 and EF56 models by the Japanese National Railways (JNR). A total of 24 units were rebuilt. These locomotives were modified and renumbered as EF59 to serve as bank engines for the steep grades of the Sanyo Main Line.
