These were delivered two years later with the new designation 218. After the operating results were successful, a total of 398 BR 218 locomotives were delivered from 1971 to 1979. During this procurement period there were numerous design differences: the bogies were revised, the engine performance was increased from 2,500 HP to 2,800 HP and the installation of new fans changed the roof geometry. The 218 series was not only very different in terms of construction, the color scheme was also very diverse. Initially painted in the classic crimson red, the paint changed to the familiar ocean blue\/ivory from 1975 onwards.
